Freestyle Diagnostic Test

To provide a clear and useful analysis, please do not send random swim clips. After purchasing this service, you will complete one of the following freestyle tests.

Please choose only one test. If you are not sure which one to choose, start with the 4x25 Initial Test.


Option 1: 4x25 Initial Test

Recommended for adult swimmers, beginner or intermediate triathletes, masters swimmers, and swimmers who want a clear technical diagnosis without excessive fatigue.

Swim 4 x 25m freestyle with 20–40 seconds rest between each repetition.

25m #1 — Dive Start + Controlled Freestyle / Side View from Pool Deck

If your pool allows safe diving, start with a dive. Then swim freestyle at around 70–80% effort.

The person filming should record from the side of the pool and follow the swimmer, keeping the full body in frame.

This video helps analyze:

  • Dive start, if included
  • Streamline and breakout
  • General freestyle overview
  • Body position
  • Rotation
  • Breathing
  • Kick rhythm
  • Stroke timing

If diving is not available, start from a push-off.

25m #2 — Race Pace / Side View from Pool Deck

Swim at around 90–95% effort. The person filming should walk beside you from the pool deck.

This is one of the most important videos because it shows how your technique changes when speed increases.

This video helps identify:

  • Loss of body position
  • Shortened stroke
  • Head lift during breathing
  • Loss of rotation
  • Changes in kick rhythm
  • Timing issues at high speed
  • Tempo changes under intensity

25m #3 — Strong Pace / Front View from Pool Deck

Swim at around 85–95% effort toward the camera.

Place the camera at the end of the lane so the swimmer moves directly toward it.

This video helps analyze:

  • Hand entry
  • Crossover
  • Head movement
  • Breathing asymmetry
  • Body alignment
  • Kick width
  • Side-to-side movement

25m #4 — Strong Pace / Underwater View if Available

Swim at around 85–95% effort.

If possible, record from underwater. The best option is an underwater side view, following the swimmer.

This video helps analyze:

  • Hand entry
  • Catch
  • Pull phase
  • Hip position
  • Kick mechanics
  • Underwater alignment

If underwater video is not available, repeat a side view or front view from the pool deck.


Option 2: 4x50 Advanced Test

Recommended for competitive swimmers, advanced masters swimmers, and triathletes who want a more complete analysis at higher intensity and under fatigue.

Swim 4 x 50m freestyle with 30–60 seconds rest between each repetition.

50m #1 — Dive Start + Strong Freestyle / Side View from Pool Deck

If your pool allows safe diving, start with a dive. Then swim freestyle at around 75–85% effort.

The person filming should record from the side of the pool and capture the start, breakout, and as much of the 50m as possible.

This video helps analyze:

  • Dive start, if included
  • Entry and streamline
  • Breakout timing
  • Transition into freestyle
  • Natural freestyle mechanics
  • Body position
  • Rotation
  • Breathing rhythm
  • Timing and tempo

If diving is not available, start from a push-off.

50m #2 — Race Pace / Side View from Pool Deck

Swim at around 90–95% effort. The person filming should walk beside you from the pool deck.

This is one of the most important videos because it shows how your freestyle behaves at race speed.

This video helps analyze:

  • Body position at high speed
  • Rotation under intensity
  • Breathing mechanics at race pace
  • Kick rhythm
  • Stroke length
  • Stroke timing
  • Tempo and rhythm
  • Loss of efficiency under speed

50m #3 — Race Pace / Front View from Pool Deck

Swim at around 90–95% effort toward the camera.

Place the camera at the end of the lane and record the swimmer coming directly toward it.

This video helps identify:

  • Asymmetry
  • Head movement
  • Breathing imbalance
  • Kick direction
  • Loss of stability at speed
  • Side-to-side movement

50m #4 — Sustained Fast Pace / Underwater View if Available

Swim at a strong but sustainable pace, around 85–90% effort.

If possible, record from underwater. The best option is an underwater side view. An underwater front view is also very useful.

This video helps analyze:

  • Stroke efficiency
  • Underwater alignment

If underwater video is not available, repeat a side view or front view from the pool deck.


Optional Bonus: Dive Start + Breakout Review

If your pool allows safe diving, you may start the first repetition of your test with a dive.

This gives your coach an additional opportunity to review your start, streamline, breakout, and transition into freestyle.

The goal is not to provide a full race-start analysis, but to identify key technical details that may affect your speed and efficiency during the first strokes.

Your coach will review:

  • Body position during the dive
  • Entry angle
  • Streamline position
  • Underwater alignment
  • Breakout timing
  • Transition into freestyle
  • First strokes after the breakout
  • First breath timing

Safety note: Only dive if it is safe, allowed at your pool, and the pool is deep enough. If you are unsure, start from a push-off. Your freestyle analysis can still be completed without a dive.


How to Record Your Videos

Clear video is very important for a useful analysis. Please record horizontally when possible and keep the swimmer’s full body visible.

1. Side View from the Pool Deck

The person filming should walk beside the swimmer along the pool deck.

The video should show:

  • Head
  • Arms
  • Hips
  • Legs
  • Breathing
  • Recovery
  • Full body line

This angle is very useful for analyzing body position, rotation, breathing, timing, tempo, and overall freestyle rhythm.

2. Front View from the Pool Deck

Place the camera at the end of the lane while the swimmer swims directly toward it.

This angle helps analyze:

  • Hand entry
  • Crossover
  • Head position
  • Breathing asymmetry
  • Body alignment
  • Kick direction
  • Side-to-side movement

3. Underwater Side View

If available, record from underwater on the side and follow the swimmer.

This is one of the best angles for reviewing:

  • Hand entry
  • Catch
  • Pull
  • Push
  • Hip position
  • Kick mechanics
  • Underwater body alignment

4. Underwater Front View

If available, record from underwater in front of the swimmer while the swimmer moves toward the camera.

This angle is useful for identifying:

  • Crossover
  • Asymmetry
  • Head alignment
  • Kick width
  • Body stability
  • Hand path under the water

Minimum Video Requirement

If you cannot record all the recommended angles, please send at least:

  1. Side view from the pool deck at race pace
  2. Front view from the pool deck at race pace

Underwater video is highly recommended, but it is not required to get started.

Important Note

The most important videos are the race pace side view and the race pace front view. These angles allow your coach to see how your freestyle technique changes when you swim fast.
