Benefits of swimming:

1. Improves cardiorespiratory and cardiovascular health.

A systematic review published in 2024 on adolescents concluded that regular swimming improves cardiorespiratory capacity, cardiac output, hemodynamics, and heart growth, as well as body composition. (Effects of Swimming Exercise on Early Adolescent’s Physical Conditioning and Physical Health, PMC, 2024).

2. Reduces inflammation and protects against chronic diseases

A 2025 systematic review (102 studies analyzed) showed that, as a low-impact, full-body exercise, swimming helps modulate the body's inflammatory pathways, which is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular, neurological, and rheumatological diseases. (How Swimming Modulates Inflammatory Pathways in Pain, Neurodegenerative, and Metabolic Disorders, PMC, 2025).

3. Benefits mental and emotional health

Another systematic review from 2025 found consistent evidence that swimming reduces stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms, in addition to improving mood, in adolescents and young adults. It is associated with mechanisms such as parasympathetic activation and endorphin release. (Blue Health Among Children, Adolescents, and Youth Psychological Well-Being, Frontiers in Psychology, 2025).

4. Provides cognitive and functional benefits in older adults

A 2026 review on older adults concluded that swimming is a promising non-pharmacological intervention for cognitive function, in addition to reporting consistent improvements in general physical fitness (cardiorespiratory fitness and strength) and psychological variables such as attention, depression, and anxiety. It is especially valuable for being a low-impact and low-risk activity. (Effects of Swimming on Cognitive and Health Outcomes in Older Adults, Frontiers in Medicine, 2026)

5. Low-impact activity for all ages

Thanks to the buoyancy of water, swimming reduces the load on joints, making it an accessible and safe option for developing children as well as older adults or people in rehabilitation. (Effects of Swimming on Cognitive and Health Outcomes in Older Adults, Frontiers in Medicine, 2026).
